cacti

Question
I have a plant I guess i'ts a cactus but has no needles. The leaves are straight out and pointy on the ends. Also there are little white dots all over it. It came from wal-mart several years ago, but they do not carry it now and could not identify it for me. Looking straight down on it, it looks like a star burst, and was abought the size of a 50 cent piece when i got it.Now it is as big around as a tea saucer it has produced many starts but now is turnning brownish red and dying. What is it and how do I save it?

Answer
sounds like it could be in the agave family.  there are millions of plants out there, so w/out seeing it i can't be sure.  send a digital photo(jpeg format) to       [email protected]
and i can give you more of a positve answer.
the care would still be similar as for most tropical plants.
whenever the nitetime temps go below 45 you should bring them inside(even if only for the nite). if the day temps are above 50 you can leave them outside during the day. direct sunlite if too harsh can turn cacti foliage red. if they are left dry too long the leaves will turn hard brown.
water by weight. put a saucer under the pot. water and let the plant sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes.  after that time pour off any excess water in the saucer.  pick up the pot.  it should feel heavy.  don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight.  outdoors check the plant everyday. indoors check it every 5-10 days.  watering frequency depends on many factors(sun exposure, wind, day temps, etc.). the advantage to cacti are that they can dry out a little more w/out causing them to wilt and lose leaves.
good luck.
