QuestionHi! If you could advise me, I would be eternally grateful! First of all, I live in Tennessee and have two potted ficus trees approximately eight years old. They live on my covered front porch during the summer. I would like to put them in the back yard (northeast exposure) but don't know if they could stand full sun for 6-7 hours a day. I have already repotted them twice but they already need something larger. In your expert opinion, would you repot and move them? Also, what do you recommend mixing with potting soil for such a large container plant? Thank you so very much!!!
Answerthey will do well in filtered shade or morning sun. 6-7 hours of full sun will burn the foliage. in FL they are grown under shade cloth because they will not toleratre full sun. it will bleach the leaves a white color and kill the plant.
i'm in southern NJ. you need to visit a local garden center/nursery to quiz them on indoor houseplant care. buy an inexpensive houseplant care book(ortho, sunset, etc.) while there. it will tell you how to prune weeping figs(ficus benjamina). head back the main branches to reduce the overall size of the plants. don't repot them often. they will remain smaller if left in the same container for years. monthly fertilizing during the growing season is necessary to keep them healthy.
water by weight. put a saucer under the pot when watering. let it sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes and then pour off the excess. pick up(or lean) the pot. it should feel heavy. don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight(usually about once every 5-14 days depending on pot size, sunlite, temps, etc.). do not let it go too dry(wilt).
good luck
