QuestionWhat is the basic difference between a "fruit" and a "vegetable"?
Answerthe basic difference is what they are growing on. trees and many woody shrubs produce fruit and or berries. a fruit is the apparatus that carries the seeds after sexual production of the plant. vegetables are the same fruiting bodies but produced on herbacious plants (non-woody). fruit is really a term for what the seeds are produced in after the flower is fertilized or pollinated. on a vegetable plant the same process takes place and the seeds are produced in a fruiting body (the vegetable). the terms are often intermingled and it is a matter of interpretation.
