RE: BATTERY OPERATED TIMER FOR WATER HOSE VS. ELECTRONIC+VALVES

Question
RE: BATTERY OPERATED TIMER FOR WATER HOSE VS. ELECTRONIC+VALVES

Dear Robert Diersing:

There are simple battery operated one-zone timers you can connect to water hoses. I can use multiple of them to zone. I can connect black irrigation tubes using adapters. What is the advantage/disadvantage of this system as opposed to electronic timer + valves (which is more expensive)? Is the valve system less leaky?

Answer
Hello, my advice would be to install a traditional manifold and timer if the application is long term and a battery operated spigot setup if it is for a temporary application. "Less leaky" depends on the quality of components you are using along with the quality of workmanship during installation. I have a battery operated zone I used when I had a few large trees installed and it has worked well but I do plan on reworking it into a permanent type of installation shortly. Also if you are in a climate where you experience freezing temperatures you need to take proper precautions to avoid freeze damage. You may also be creating a cross connection which requires backflow protection.
