relay switch

Question
i have a sprinkler system that i have installed on a lake.  have 7 zones with hunter controller.  have all 7 zones with individual wires and a common for each.  my question is... does the common used for valves run to relay or does it have to have it's own common?  i have a dedicated pump wire from controller but pump not working properly when turned on.  it will run for approx. 15 seconds then cycle thru each zone before showing pump error?  i even dug where commons are made up with valves closest to pump relay and cut them off to have stand alone and same result.  it is an orbit relay and about 250 from box.  i have talked with crew that put in relay and store where i got all my irrigation supplies at with everyone saying all is done right?  sounds like a wiring issue but which one?  thanks for any imput.

Answer
Hey David, the relay does not need its own common wire. It sounds like the relay switch might be bad, or the wire is bad. I would first check your voltage at the relay switch, it should be between 22 to 26 volts. If you are not getting the correct voltage at the relay, then it is either the wire, or the Hunter controller. If you are not getting the correct voltage at the relay switch, check the voltage at the controller, on the Pump start terminal. If you are getting the correct voltage at the controller, but not at the relay, then the wire is faulty. If you are not gettting the correct voltage at the controller, then the controller is faulty. If you are getting the correct voltage at the relay, then the relay is faulty. It could also not necessarily be the wire or the relay switch, but the size of wire that is run from the controller to the relay switch.I hope this narrows it down for you. Good luck and have a great day.
