shut off

Question
Hi, I recently purchased a home and I am trying to get the existing sprinkler system to work.  I'm told that it did work for the previous owner but, had not been used in awhile.  First I checked the timer and it had an electrical problem so I have installed a new one.  It is all configured but, when I went to test the system there was no water.  I'm guessing the previous owner shut off the main valve.  I've looked all around the front lawn for one of those green boxes and can't find it!  The only thing I can find that resembles a shut off it a white handled thing that is coming up from the ground in one of my flower beds next to the house.  Could this be it?  If not, any other suggestion on where to find it?  Thanks

Answer
Hey Kris, you could try turning this on first. Also I would look around the area where your main water enters the house. Usually the main turn on valve will be teed off of the main pipe running into the house. Sorry to be so vague but it is hard to tell you without seeing the property. Good luck and have a great day.
