AnswerHey Joe, basically the valve box is just a thick piece of plastic. A hole is dug for the valves, and then the valve box is placed over the valves, and then dirt is filled in around the outside of the box. Most valve boxes have a lip at the bottom that sticks out about 2 inches, and when the dirt is filled in keeps the boxes from being able to be pulled up. If you need to remove a valve box from around the valves, you need to dig all the dirt from around the box all the way down to the lip, and then you should be able to lift it off the valves.
