anti-siphon valve

Question
QUESTION: I have a Rainbird 3/4" anti-siphon valve.  It's about a year old.  It leaks all the time at the cap assembly.  I opened it up and cleaned the gasket and tightened the cap, but it still leaks.  I also replaced the diaphragm, thinking that would help, but it didn't.  If I replace the gasket, will that stop it from leaking?

ANSWER: Hey Selma, I hope this helps. Normally if the valve is leaking from the anti-syphon part of the valve assembly, it is either the gasket that fits around the top of the cap, or the plunger that fits up into the cap. This plunger, when water is turned on to it, will be forced to the top of the cap, and seats tight, so no water will leak. I would either check your gasket, or the plunger. Also, when you screw the cap back on, don't over tighten it, just try to hand tighten it at first. Good luck and let me know if I can be of further help, thanks and have a great day.

QUESTION: Thanks, but the problem is that it is always seeping, even when the valve is off.  I'm not sure where the cause of this problem is. The valve is not that old.  I installed it about a year ago.

Answer
Hey Selma, I would suggest replacing it with a brass unit. Champion makes a good anti-syphon device, and they're less than $15.00. In the long run, you will probably have no problems with it. Can you return the Rainbird valve? I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. Thanks and have a great day.
