Low Water Pressure/Fluctuating Pressure

Question
We've had some major water pressure issues in our subdivision since the city has "re-Engineered" us to gravity flow earlier this summer.  Is there some device which can be added to "boost" output in a residential irrigation system that also has the ability to automatically not run when the pressure is ample?   I have a Zoysia Lawn which is taking a beating with hot spots due to low pressure.  I literally stood and watched the pressure drop 30 PSI and my rotating heads decrease output by a factor of 3.  Thanks any help is appreciated.

Answer
Darin,

A booster pump is a typical installation in an irrigation system. Be prepared to spend a little money.....

I would suggest using a 3/4 - 1 hp self priming centrifugal pump (LITTLE GIANT - TSURUMI - ATLANTA - ABS -check your local sprinkler supply store) with a smart control/inverter that regulates operation. This will give you a minimum of 45-50 psi at the discharge. Although this type of installation is not above the typical do-it-yourselfer, I would suggest hiring a professional irrigation contractor (check irrigation.org for certified contractors in your area) and having them install an entire pump package (fiberglass enclosure, smart controller, main power connection, quick power disconnect, quick couplers, etc - approx $1,500, but worth it). Otherwise, this type of pump will need to be hooked up to your electronic controller with a pump start relay and has special disconnect requirements depending on your local electrical codes, so at least consult your local sprinkler supply store/electrician.

Good luck - BC
