QuestionWe turned on our 16 zone system in May and it has been running fine. Now, I am not getting any water to any of the zones so we checked the valve and the water meter is spinning like crazy with no other water source running. This must mean a leak from the sprinkler valve down to the station which is a considerable length. Is there a way to check for water using an machine of somekind like a devining rod? We did notice the water in the pipes and I hear the station running but the water isn't making it down far enough.
AnswerHi Linda
First check all the control valves. Look for open bleed screws and solenoids left partially open. If there is more than 1 valve left open at once, the water will run to both (or all) open valves which will not be enough to run multiple zones yet still make your meter spin. You will hear water rushing through any valve that is open.
If you are absolutely certain that none of the valves are open - manually or otherwise broken, your note hints to a main line issue so I hope you have shut off the water source to the system.
As for finding the leak it shouldn't take long for the water to make its way to the surface because pipes are typically installed 8-12" below grade. Follow and walk the route of the main line with the water running and it will eventually turn up in the form of a soft spongy area above the problem area.
Let me know how you make out or if there are more details.
Good Luck
