Well pumping sand, then clear

Question
I am trying to work with a well so that I may use it for my sprinkler system.

My pump is 3/4 HP.  Well is 102' deep, with pump backed off 5'.  Well company tested and said they hit sand at 85'.  I had them jet blast it and set the pump for me.  As far as I know, the pump is at 97'.

When I start pumping, the water is clear for about 3-4 minutes.  Then, it is dirty with sand for about 5 minutes, and then runs nice and clear.  I have ran it for 2-3 hours and it stays nice and clear and pumping 20GPM.  When it pumps sand at the beginning, I get about a cup full of sand in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket.

Any suggests on how I may work the sand out.

I don't want sand in my sprinkler system.
I have two hose spickets fully open with garden hoses.

Answer
Hi Earl

It appears that the sand bed at 85' is your issue.  Over time, the sand may work itself out if it's a new well.  When a pump draws water from a source, there is always some turbulence that occurs during operation and settling afterwards, hence the sand at the start of the cycle.  There are a couple of options.  If it's really problematic, you may want to have the well dug deeper beyond the sand bed.  Conversely, you may want to install a wye strainer on the suction side to catch the sand.  Just remember to clean it regularly so the clogged filter doesn't restrict the flow from the well.

Good Luck

Tony
