losing pressure

Question
My pump will charge the system to 70 psi's and the turn off once it turns off it takes about 2 minutes to drop to 40 psi's and then kicks back on again.  Anything I can do to fix this or do I need to call a professional to come out and fix.  The other problem is that sometimes it stops charging the system once it hits 40 psi's and drops all the way to 10 psi's

Answer
Good question.
Your pump should operate this way. When it drops to 40 PSI the pressure switch turns the pump on. When it reaches it set high pressure it shuts-off.
The normal range is 20PSI between the high and low. (On at 40, off at 60) The problem of going down to 10PSI and then off at 40PSI is a pressure switch problem and should be repaired. If your not familiar with electricity and plumbing, I would refer you to a professional. Improper cycling can damage the pump motor. It also uses more electricity.
One thing you can try is to use more water on each zone. The pump is producing more water than your sprinklers system needs. That's why it builds up and shuts-off. This is called "cycling". By using larger nozzles or wiring 2 zones together you can utilize all the water the pump produces. This is a much better operating condition for the pump.
Good luck.

Matt
