QuestionIs it appropriate to have an underground sprinkler system installed if my house, and thus the system, are supplied water by a private well? Should I restrict the square footage of installation, say to only the front yard? It has been suggested that because I have a well, I risk the well drying out much sooner because the sprinkler systems use much more water than a conventional hose fed sprinkler.
AnswerHello, sorry for not replying sooner, I'm on vacation and the Internet service isn't too good here.
I live in Michigan so we have very little water restrictions. However, I would check with the local codes if you have any for your area. Whomever issued the well permit your well driller would be a good source of information.
In most cases, if a well is properly installed you shouldn't have a problem. Many of my customers find they use less water with a sprinkler system than they did with a hose system. Mostly because the water is evenly distributed with a controlled schedule so there is little waste. Obviously, you can waste water by running the system too much, but that is what the controller is for. I would recommend a rain shut off device. They save a lot of water.
