QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
We have a GE pump (older model). 1.5 HP 220 watts that pumps water from the lake to water our lawn. Before hooking up the hoses and sprinklers I was testing it out. I primed the pump, opened all the spigots and turned it on. The pump comes on and pumps water - - for about 3 minutes - - and then cuts off. If I wait a few minutes and try again it does the same thing.
Any ideas on what could be causing it to cut off?
Thanks so much. I really appreciate any help you can provide.
ANSWER: I take it that tthere is not a pressure tank on the system, that it pumps directly into the irrigation system. In this case, I would think you have an electrical problem with the pump that is causing it to shut off prematurely. If there is a pressure tank on the system, you may have a problem with the pressure switch that regulates the pump.

QUESTION: Correct, there is no tank. Direct in line pump and no pressure switch. Any recommendations on how to trouble shoot the electrical issue? I am assuming you are talking about a bad relay?
AnswerYes, it could be a relay, or a problem in the pump motor. Sometimes when the brushes on the motor get worn, the pump will work for a while, then when it heats up, it stops running. For some motors the brushes can be replaced, others not. I suggest you have a service person examine it.
