ditch pump irrigation

Question
QUESTION: Hi.  My husband and I need to get a watering system set up for a lawn we hope to put in next year.  Our well that supplies our home won't have enough water or pressure to do it on top of the water demands of our house, so we need to pump water from a ditch that is about 50 feet or more from where our lawn will be.  What kind of pump would be best?  Is there any type of pump that can be turned on from our house as it is inconvenient to get to the ditch?  Also, we'd like to run the water underground from the pump to our lawn?  Can this be done, and what supplies will be needed?

I know this is a lot of questions.  I hope you can be of some help.

Thanks.
ANSWER: Hi Taffy,
What you want to do is very possible. I need some more information first. Is the ditch your talking about filled with water all the time and is it replaced consistently. You need to have a constant three to four feet of water as to not dry up the water source. Please write back. Thank-you.

QUESTION: Yes.  The ditch will be full and flowing all summer except for rare occasions when it will be dammed above the pump for irrigation, but we will be aware of this and won't use the pump at that time.

Answer
The supplies you will need just to get your pump set up are a pump, pump relay, timer with a pump relay terminal,a suction line, and power to the pump. The pump you want is a one and a half horse single stage self priming pump. I really like using a pump for irrigation because of the pressure and gallons you get. Plus there is not so much demand on your house. I will tell you, however, that you really should hire a lawn irrigation company to set up your system. They really know how to do it right and there is always a warranty. I hope this has helped. Thank-you for writing.
