Instructions for use of compression fittings

Question
Hi,
I have put together a drip irrigation system through a website and ordered it for delivery. I ordered compression couplings, but never used them before.

Can you explain how I attach the 1/2 poly pipe (0.7 od-0.6 id) with the compression couplings ?
I understand how to use the spin-lock couplings and the barbed couplings, but I can not for the life of me figure out how the compression couplings work ? (maybe it will make sence when the kit arrives !)

Do the parts "set" once pressure is put on the system, or how does it work ?

Thank you
Kenneth

Answer
Kenneth, you can wait and see what comes with the kit and get back to me. To get to the 1/2" poly I doubt if they'll send you the right fitting for that, but they should send you a compression x threaded fitting that will allow you to reduce down and get to a poly barbed x thread connection. I feel you pain on compression fittings and experience tells me this : they should line up nicely (don't cock the pipe or bow it in), DON'T overtighten plastic compression fittings,(hand tight plus a half turn should be enough),DON'T cut the pipe to short,(cut it long and keep whittling on it until the length is perfect. You'll probably get plastic compession fittings which will involve 1,2,or 3 spinning nuts, ferrules and rubber o-rings or beveled o-rings and hopefully good instructions. If you've got the beveled o-rings the direction of the bevel is important. I believe the point of the bevel towards the threaded nut. If you are talking about the compression fittings that hold the drip together those just wiggle in, sometimes not so easily. A little lubrication (spit) will help. Obviously, I doing a little guessing as to what you're going to end up getting. As always feel free to write again and as more info becomes available.  Thanks,James
