walkway materials

Question
We live in N. Virginia and want to have a 4' walkway installed to our front door that is stable for seniors to walk on, weed-resistant and environmentally friendly.  Some firms want to use flagstone with fine sand between and others suggest flagstone in 4" concrete base for permanency.  Most of the walkway would get full sun daily, but it would pass over a sometimes soggy patch of lawn.  What do you recommend?

Answer
Hey, Jesse.

I actually would use a combination of those two methods. Pour a concrete base of about two inches. Set the flagstone and fill in between with sand. For a really nice effect, fill in with soil and plant some ground cover in between the flagstone. Some that I know can take full sun and foot traffic include dwarf mondo grass, creeping jenny, mazus reptans, sweet flag (dwarf varieties), veronica georgia blue, and thyme (creeping thyme, wooly thyme, or elfin thyme).

Hope that helps.
