QuestionI recently bought creeping thyme which was called "Footprint plants" in the nursery, meaning they are for between paving stones. I planted them, and 2 have died already, probably because the weather got so hot. Must I plant them deeper, or water daily, or do you have any other suggstions on getting this variety of thyme to eventually fill in between 8 paving stones measuring approx 10x10 inches each? I live in Zone 7b. Thanks!
AnswerHey, Patricia.
There's at least three possible reasons. One is that it did get too hot before they were able to get well established in the new soil. Additionally, they do require a good deal of organic material, so if you have a clay soil or a sandy soil, that coupled with the heat could definitely have killed them. The other thing is that you might not have packed the soil down enough around the plants, resulting in the roots drying out and burning, thus killing the plant.
The soil should be prepared to a depth of 6-8 inches with organic material. That's probably the most important thing for creeping thyme.
If you take care of those factors, it should serve you well between the pavers.
