QuestionSean..I live in Western NC and I have cleared a field that is full of poison ivy and rocks. I have covered this field after clearing with black plastic to kill out and start over. This ground is too rough to rake in grass seed. Is there any kind of ground cover that will start easily and help to keep out weeds? Thanks Bill
AnswerThe simple answer is nothing except kudzu. And my guess is that you don't want that. Any commercially available ground cover will be way to slow to effectively cover the field and block out other seeds from growing. Wind blows seeds in from all over.
Did you know that you do not have to "rake" in the seed (although it is better in most cases if you can). You can just throw it out with your hand or a hand spreader and cover lightly with hand broadcast wheat straw, then water it in and it will generally grow as long as you get some rain or irrigation several more times in the first couple of weeks following the seeding. Although this year it is really too late to get a good start on fescue or winter rye you can still do bermuda and other grasses that are available in seed.
It would help if I knew what your long term goal was for the field.
Why did you clear it to start with?
