Question
We just purchased a home Grand Junction CO -the back yard is south facing and 14 wide to a white vinyl fence and 60 feet long (last 16 of 60 RV parking).  It is at present cover with decor rock. We have a small concrete patio area set into the middle of the home as a sitting area. We are grass people and have grand children.  What can we do that would be "family" and very inviting.  We love color and shade trees.

Your question is very broad, and the answer really must be left up to personal taste. However, what I would suggest is to take a walk (or drive) around some neighborhoods that you like (including yours, of course) and look at landscaping that appeals to you. You could also visit the local nurseries, book stores, and library and look at many of the books and magazines that show pictures of yards and landscaping.
