play set

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a wooden swing set in my back yard. What do you suggest that I put down under the swings. I really don't want wood chips.
ANSWER: Hi Jenny,

I'm sorta on the fence about shredded pine bark or wood chips.

Here are 2 cons:
1. They degrade over time and often need refilling or replacement.
2. They compact over time and can become a hard surface which defeats the purpose of keeping the kids safe from falls. However, if you keep it raked and filled properly compaction becomes less of an issue.

Here are the pros:
I do think mulch is good for drainage and looks attractive, but, that may be low on your priorities. And, it's a great solution if you are on a tight budget which many people are.

From my experience and research, you may want to try rubber mulch. The initial cost is higher, but, it doesn't deteriorate, therefore never needs replacing. It also has excellent shock absorbant qualities. And, it's non-toxic and comes in many colors.

Another alternative would be rubber, playground playmats - specifically for outdoor use.

What is the size of your play area and what budget (if you don't mind me asking) are you looking at?

Kathy

QUESTION: I tried rubber mats. The problem was that it got muddy under them and they started to slide around and make a mess. Is there anything I can put under the mats to let the water drain instead of sit?
I am trying to avoid "chips" of any kind, because they seem to just get kicked while children swing.
Budjet...low as  can be :)

Answer
Hi Jenny,

Rubber mats need to be installed over a hard, compact surface or a surface that will guarantee water will run of of it. There are many brands of rubber mats on the market. I came across this one if you are interested. I have never used their product so I can't give a full recommendation.

How old are your children and what type of play sets do you have? This may be relevant as we come up with a solution.

Thanks,
Kat
