QuestionI wanted to know about rubber railroad ties. I thought about using them to put around a swing set for a decorative look. Is this advisable and where can they be bought? Is there a local distributor, we are in (Southeast) Newport, Michigan.
Thanks
AnswerRubber railroad ties are a great answer to containing a play area for both practical and aesthetic reasons. I am assuming you are putting mulch inside the play area? If this is the case, then remember to dig about 3-4 inches into the ground where your railroad tie will go - whether you use mulch or not. If you do use mulch, then make sure it is raised enough to contain it.
I am in Virginia, but, I searched a bit and found this place located in Michigan. I'm not sure it helps - let me know :-) They are a horse riding business, but also deal in farm and ranch type materials - including railroad ties.
Make sure that these are rubber and not wood railroad ties. Wood railroad ties are soaked in the chemical, creosote, and are considered extremely toxic - something you definitely don't want near a children's play area.
There are other great options to containing a play area. If you are still interested, just email back.
Good luck!
