dog friendly landscape

Question
OK, I have a unique problem.  I have a dog that loves to run in circles.  He ran around our hot tub and created a huge muddy track.  Well we just leveled our backyard filled in this track and layed sod.  My dog has been relocated to the side of the house, we layed sod there as well as some rock which is in front of the dog house.  As I am sure you can guess the dog is now creating a muddy ring again in the sod.  What can we put down that will allow him to run like he wants but won't cause a muddy mess?

Answer
The best thing in my experience is lots of hardwood mulch like 8" with gravel and sand bellow to ensure it drains well. Also you may use pea gravel.
