seeding a new lawn

Question
I have removed interlocking bricks that were in my back yard, because I would rather it be a lawn. After removing the bricks, I found 1 ?inches of sand then a black weed barrier cloth and then the original clay and rock ground. Can I simply work top soil into the sand and then plant the grass seed, or should I remove the sand and the weed barrier and then add top soil? If I work top soil into the sand I will have a 4 inch soil sand mixture, is this enough for grass seed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Darren

Answer
Darren,

I would remove the weed fabric, sandy soil, and some of clay soil as well.  Remove 6-8" of the unwanted soil, and replace with screened topsoil. When you have enough topsoil in the area and tamped down, keep the upper layer of soil loose and apply quality grass seed and also apply grass seed aide. You can find grass seed aide at Lowes.  Another option is to apply sod, this is more expensive.
