Hydrander

Question

Hi Marc,

I have had a Hydrander (blue) for 6 years. I got
beautiful blooms the 1st 2 years and nothing since. The bush it self is huge and needs to be cut back. How to I trim and get it to bloom again.
I live in the Boston area if that helps.

Thank you

Answer
There are all sorts of reason why a Hydrangea might not be blooming.  Here is the National Arboretum's website information on care & trouble-shooting of this plant:

http://www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/faqs/hydrangeafaq2.html

As far as trimming method, its pretty specific to the variety & time of year.  If you trim it at the wrong time (winter) or in the wrong way (cutting too far back into the plant), you're actually removing next year's blooms.  They, like Azaleas, bloom on last year's stems.

In this regard, I deffer to my fellow AllExperts "question-answerer", Gary Bachman -

Home it helps.  -Marc
