transplanting large trees

Question
Sir, I have a question for you that is, how should I say? Huge times three. 15 years ago I purchased many blue spruces and "temporarily" planted two close to the house. Now they're the largest spruces I have,do to the soil I transported to this bed. I would love some info on the probability of transplanting them. At the beginning I did say times three. The third one that needs tranplanting is I believe a Douglas fir. With all that said and out of the way, here are the info you'll need they are all at least 25" tall, spruces are against the house and the fir is right at the inside corner of a concrete drive and walk. I live outside of Cleveland Ohio. I recently talked to a group of men that are nursury workers about contracting them to help me with this endeavor. They said they would be willing to do it now but I'm not sure about the timing. I'm alittle concerned about he fir because I believe the roots may be too far under the concrete.I want to thankyou in advance for your consideration and your response.

Answer
Evergreens should be transplanted when they are small - about 4 ft or less in height. You wrote they are 25"(inches) or did you meaan 25'? Either way they should be moved in early spring before bud break or from the second week of August to mid-September. When transplanting, retain as much of the roots and undisturbed soil around the roots as possible during the move. Water heavily after transplanting. Secondly, it is not advisable to plant spruce trees near fir trees due to fir-spruce tree gall pest problems. The gall lives on fir and deposit their eggs on spruce tree new growth buds. It can severely harm spruce trees. Whoever sold you the trees should know this. Good luck with your trees, and if you have any other questions please feel free to send me a email. Have a great day!
