QuestionThe former owners of our home planted a blue spruce about 3 feet from our home. The tree is now about 25 feet tall and we are concerned -- can the tree destroy our home's foundation?
What would you suggest we do?
Thank you, Della
AnswerThe Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) needs space - so planting them too close to buildings, walks, or fences is a bad idea. Yours may eventually get 80 to 100 feet tall, so now is the time to "bite the bullet", and remove it.
Not so much for the sake of foundation, though it may lift it up soon, but because this tree will always look out of place; smashed up against the structure, with half of its branches shaved off, due to the proximity of the building wall.
If you want a tall, evergreen that can grow close to a building, I'd recommend a Thuja/Arborvitae (the best would be a 'fastigiata','pyramidalis', or 'columnaris' variety) or a Leland Cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii).
Sorry for the bad news. -Marc
