just viewed a program on a cable show regarding an evasive root system destroying the slab and other extensive damage to a home. we have cracks and are concerned. we believe the tree in front and way to side of home might be of problem. Front tree possibly 60 years old, branches do extend over home itself, we are planning to trim. Is this particular type of tree root system evasive? should we just remove? of course we shall contact experts in our area. And I do have some professional experience as well, but not for sure with this tree. Almost too much shade in yard, is this rare to be this age?
AnswerThe roots of the black locust are usually shallow and wide spreading, but deep roots can also be produced on DRY sites, and they have been known to tear up asphalt & break up concrete. Root pruning: as an added kicker - they are sensitive to root damage, so root-pruning may not be good, if you want to keep the tree. (Kind of like a crazy relative, that comes for a visit, makes a mess, and then gets mad when you say something!)
The Black Locust root-sprouts vigorously, and is an invasive tree in some areas...it is tough to control with a mower or chemicals. And, as I recall from school, it抯 not too good for cattle. The tree emits a natural chemical (like the Eucalyptus) that keeps other plants from growing under it.
You guessed what I was going to say: Since I don't know what exact kind of Locust you have (there are a number of varieties of Gleditsia/Locust, some bread for a better growth habit), my advice would be to talk to a local expert. -Marc
