QuestionHi Laura- I spent the past yr. creating an English Garden
however I have a challanging area... we have a rambler with in-
ground window wells for our basement so our foundation is
about 2 to 3 feet high before our stone and brick begins.
Currently I have "Nikko Blue" Hydrengia's 3 to be exact placed
and spaced apart however I don't have any winter foilage up
against the house yet (foundation) to be exact. I am looking for
something in the evergreen family that will compliment the
hydrengias in the summer yet give cold evergreen foilage
durring the winter when the hydrengias go away. Nothing that
will get any taller than 5 ft. tall so it won't out do the hydrengias.
I was thinking along the lines of Mugo, Spruce, Junipers.
Currently on the corner of our lot we have a Fat Albert Spruce
and two Blue Star Junipers surrounded with Daisies,
Delphiniums, Coneflowers, Glardia etc. a true English Cottage
Garden. Any ideas or suggestions. We live in Utah our plant
number I think is 3. Prefer soft bristles and dark greens to blue
greens. Any input is greatly appreciated!
AnswerKatie,
Just to be safe and not recommend something that grows in my area(zone 6)but will die in your colder climate,I will give you some links to go on to shop around for some evergreens for foundation plantings. You might want to layer them.Place some taller evergreen shrubs in front of the foundation and then plant some lower growing ones in front.Contrast the colors. For instance a Boxwood in the background and a Blue Rug Juniper in the foreground.
Here are some links to help you decide on just the right evergreens to use:
