I WANT TO BUILD A BED FOR A FEW SPRUCE TREES. ABOUT 2-3 FT HIGH. THE REAR OF THE BED WILL FACE MY FENCE. WHAT CAN I USE FOR THE REAR RETAINING WALL BEING THAT IT IS NOT VISABLE? THE FRONT WILL BE DECORATIVE.

Well you have 2 choices. Since no one is going to see the back of it,I would just plant in the front and sides that are visible.
Or you can continue with the same plants in the back,but it may be too hard to water them,trim them or weed the bed.
If it were me I would just plant the visible parts of the beds.

I would recommend using whatever material you use for the front and sides of the bed to be used for the back as well. This way it will all look new and no surprises. Plus whatever you use will probably cost just as much and may be more difficult to work with.
