Weeding

Question
Hi.
I have planted perennial grass or "monkey grass", after a year I have decided to split all new growth.  Then comes the weeds, how in the world can I kill the grass that has been growing in my area of monkey grass.  The grass clippings have blown over to the area of my landscape design and its out of control I don't want to use a weeder or lawn mower.  How may I solve this?  And Weed-b-gone has killed my "tested" monkey grass!

Answer
Kymberly,
Wow. I was going to sugest Weed Be Gone which is specifically for killing grass that impedes into monkey grass. If you have the solid green type it should be no problem to disguise it.It usually just blends in with it. I have some myself and the only way to tell that there is unwanted grass in it is because it gets taller than the Monkey Grass. Then I usually take a little grass trimmer and get rid of the height of the grass so it blends back into the Monkey Grass. If you have the varigated Monkey Grass that is another story. The only way to get it out is to find the root of the grass and get itout with a had trowel.
I know that sounds tedious and it is but the only recourse left is to dig up the Monkey Grass.

If you mean that you have divided it and it has not spread yet enough to completely meet in a row and the grass is growing between it, try a foam grass killer which targets a particular patch and does not create overspray onto other plants.Spray it directly onto the weeds  and sheild the Monkey Grass with a piece of cardboard. I believe it is Round Up that makes a foam weed killer. Check in garden centers for it.
Also,I know how you feel about grass clippings blowing in your landscaping from a lawn mower. My husband knows better believe me! The mower needs to go in the other direction so that the grass clippings blow away from the landscaping beds.
Their is always a solution to most gardening problems and I hope I have given you some helpful sugestions.
