Question
I have a couple questions, #1 I have a Japanese Maple tree and I was wondering the best way to prune it and the best time of year?
#2 What is the best type of shade tree for a residential yard? We have almost 2 acres with no trees currently (used to be agricultural field). Looking for good shade tree that won't get extremely large.

1. depends on where you live. i'm in southern NJ.
now is the best time here. early spring.

2. depends on what you like.
small
-purple leaf plum
-kousa dogwood
- japanese maple(blood good)

medium
-lindens
- thornless honeylocust
- american redbud

visit a local garden center/nursery to see what they recommend for your area.
