Grow grass not rocks!

Question
We recently moved into a newly constructed home. The ground that was dug up to install the septic tank and drainage system was mostly rock, we now have knee high grass throughout the yard and are unable to mow it because of all of the rock (large and small). I would like to save money by fixing this myself. What are the steps to removing the rocks well enough so that when I put topsoil down, they do not come right back to the surface. I guess I just need to know what would be the simplest and cheapest way to make my yard look good. Its a fairly level yard about 100 x 100 feet. Thanks

Answer
James,
Well several positive points is that your yard is only 100 X 100 and is fairly level. There is no way to remove ALL the rocks but you can remove the largest ones with a garden rake. Not a leaf rake but a heavier type heavy metal rake that people use in their veggie gardens. Rake the entire area and get what rocks you are able to get up. Then bring in topsoil to make the depth 10" to 12" deep and pack it down. Then put on several more inches before sewing grass seed. Depending on where you live (if you are in zones 4,5,6)this is a good time to sew grass seed. Make sure you have enough sprinklers to cover the entire area after you sew the seed because it needs to remain moist to germinate evenly. Most people spread a layer of straw to keep the seed down and to ensure it is kept evenly moist. If you don't get rainfall for several days it is best to water it every other day unless you are in a warmer climate(zones 7,8,9 or 10)then you should water daily.
Good luck to you on your new lawn!
