QuestionI have some round landscaping stones 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch round. I also have some screenings 1/8 to 1/4 in size mixed. Can I mix the two together to give me a base to start my pavers project instead of buying some crushed stone? I plan on useing this first and compact it down to start then apply screenings then pavers. What do you think of this way?
AnswerMmmm. What concerns me is the additional airspace between the stone and pea gravel mix. You see, the screenings will take some time to 'work in' between all the spaces in this stone. You'll have some settling in places. UNLESS...you compact the screenings on top of the gravel via a mechanized plate/vibrating compactor.
Crushed limestone/screenings placed directly on undisturbed earth makes for a stable base and othe settling that does occur is minor and uniform across the job.
