QuestionI had read your suggestion regarding sega palms in pots in my pool area. However, they have developed a furry fungus in the center, the leaves are yellowing and after consulting a local gardening company (where I purchased them who did not have a money back guarantee)suggesting I spray them with Palmolive dishwashing solution mixed w/ water, they have continued to deteriorate. I also sprayed off the fungus and it has come back. Please help!! Things can not get any worse and they looked absolutely beautiful and healthy when I planted them.
Thanks
AnswerTeresa,
The Sago Palm is a tropical plant and I have never had one personally. They are basically non-existant here because of our colder winters or sometimes they sell them as houseplants. I would LOVE to have 2 big ones flanking my entrance.
I am really feeling your pain here.Fungus got on a huge pyramidal boxwood of one of my customer's garden.
I could not figure out why it was turning brown, then it spread to a few more on either side of it. Someone told me it may be a fungus so I rushed out and got fungicide and drenched the whole shrub and all the others in close proximity. Well,it didn't die but it sure looked like half of it was dead.It got a little greener this spring but it still has some bare spots where the fungus was.
I can't believe a nursery or garden center would not have a one year guarantee on their plants! That is a lesson I learned the hard way so wherever I go now I make sure there is at least a one year guarantee, especially on perennials or expensive plants like the Sago.
You can try some fungicide, which is sold in most garden centers like Lowes and WalMart. Get the concentrate and mix with water as the directions state. I made mine a bit stronger than the directions. Then mix it up in a pressurized sprayer(buy at WalMart.Lowes,etc.)and soak the plants really well all over and under the palm fronds. You may want to make a second application after a few days. That's really all you can do at this point. If they are alive then you should see some new green growth in a few weeks. Good luck and I hope they make it!
