Questioni live in N.E. Ohio and want to prune a Wichita Blue Yew which was let go for several years. I want to cut about 4 feet off of the top and trim the sides making it more slender in diameter. If I trim the top will it still grow back into a point at the top?
AnswerPhil,
I am not personally familiar with that species but every yew (if evergreen) will retain whatever shape you trim it. After you top it make sure you still trim the shape pyramidally, rounded or flat by trimming at the top until you have formed it the way you want.
If it is a specimen tree and not part of a hedge, trim it in it's natural shape which is probably pyramidal with the top of the tree angled to a point.
