What to grow next to driveway

Question
We have narrow driveway and that means that whenever we pull in we end up driving on a small section of the lawn.  No grass will grow there which creates and unsightly area in our lawn and a nice mud puddle when it rains.  We have tried to plant irrish moss there, but it did not last.  What can I grow in this area that will not invade my neighbors lawn?

Answer
Elisa,

You're asking a lot from a plant.  Actually, I don't know anything that will be able to take the damage of driving, and the compact soil that the driving creates.
If it can keep recovering quickly from the damage, that means it's a foliage factory...it will also spread quickly.

In the places I have around like the one you describe, even adding back in some dirt or gravel doesn't last for long...just gets squished back out.

The only success I've had, and this is next to a narrow entrance to an old parking lot that gets used a lot, is using one of the concrete "turf stone" products now available plus grass seed.

Dig out the area down the size and depth of the stone(s) + an extra couple inches for course gravel.  Plop it down on the gravel, making sure it's just a little higher (1/4 - 1/2") higher than you want.  The driving will settle it.  Now fill in the gaps with dirt and plant with grass seed.  The concrete takes the pressure, keeps the soil from moving and compacting.  The grass has a chance to grow.  You can mow over these things.  In a couple years you won't be able to notice it, but it will still be working.

Here's a couple of sites with pictures of what I'm talking about.

Hope this helps.
