Question
I reside in Western Canada where the climate is very dry and the weather is unpredictable, to say the least. The front of my house faces direstly north. I want to place decorative stone from the structure of the house to about 3 feet away from it as very little vegetation or grass grows there anyway. How deep shall I dig into the ground and what shall I use for a base to prevent weeds from growing there?

You should dig out about 3inches down, apply Preen according to the label instructions (this is a preemerge herbicide), lay out a layer of landscape fabric, and cover with your rock.
