QuestionI have a 2 part question... How can I identify the type of zoysia I have and here in New York where it is sold by a limited number of suppliers, can I find it in sod form rather than plugs and sprigs which take forever to fill in? Thank for your advice.
AnswerJack,
I'm not going to be much help. I only use perennial ryegrass, and some bluegrasses for special circumstances, out here in Oregon. No zoysia.
Generally, if I'm trying to identify what grass I have growing, I let it grow up to seed. This can give me the genus and species (by way of a book with pictures of mature grasses), but variety...yikes. I think you need to know from the start (ie reading the seed bag), or have a really good handle on the characteristics of your grass, and compare that to variety descriptions.
And then unless I am under a very unusual time restriction, I always seed. It's just so much cheaper than sod, and over time will do just as well, or better.
For what it's worth,
