Pruning of Weeping Mulberry

Question
Hi Mark:

We have an established(approx.15-20Yrs) Weeping Mulberry planted close our driveway. Two years ago we took it right down to it's crown and low and behold it's comming along nicely. My question is how do I prune to keep the side by the driveway in control. It had gotton so full that it was obstructing the use of it...that's why we chopped it off and kept our fingers crossed!
Now that it's managable I would like to keep it that way.

Thanks for your advise
Sue

Answer
Sue,

If it were here, I'd start a thinning rotation.  Every year take out about 1/3 of the shoots/stems.  In the second and third years, take out older and oldest stems.   This way I have overall less of it, and never have anything over 3 years old, so it stays under control.

This approach is based on an assumption that I'm making from your comments...that the new growth (after you took it all the way down) is rigid enough to hold itself up.  It's not growing and flopping over.

Another way to go, if you are satisfied with the way the current two year growth looks, is to simple take it all the way down (coppice) every other year.  I do that with a few different plants here, for control of overall size and to keep the look I get from newer growth.

For what it's worth,
Mark in Portland
