landscape under trees

Question
I have a very large old oak tree in my back yard - west side of the house.    My neighbor to the north has an equally large elm tree in her back yard.   The canopies touch toward the top,  but well above our house tops.     Beneath  are two red bud trees.   These,  of course,  are not doing so well because of the shade.    There is dappled light,  but not enough for a red bud.

To the south of my oak tree is an old fashioned lilac.   It does pretty well as long as I keep it trimed down to 6' or so.

I would like to fill in this area with shrubs, evergreens,  and small trees to provide a wind break and to establish the backbone for a bird/wildlife landscape.

Any ideas for shrubs, evergreens,  and small trees that might work beneath these two monster trees?

Thank you,
Mari

Answer
Mari,

First, your redbuds are understory trees and naturally will look a bit scraggly.  this is their native habitat.

As for the rest of your question, go to your local garden center or nursery and see what is available locally that would be suitable for your garden.  The folks there will be more than happy to show you appropriate plants.

Good luck

Gary
