QuestionI have three redbud trees that I planted several years ago and none of them bloom. They are native to NW Louisiana and they should be blooming now. Is there a variety that does not bloom?
AnswerDanette,
I don't know of a redbud variety that doesn't bloom.
I haven't had this problem with redbud, but I have with other flowering trees, especially dogwood.
The things I look for are 1) enough sun, 2) enough nutrients in the soil, 3) old enough.
For 1) you can transplant them, if they're not too big, to a place with more sun. This may not be practical for you.
For 2) Fertilize the trees. Use a balanced fertilizer (the 3 fertilizer assay numbers should be close, ie., 10-10-10). Fertilize under the tree as far out as the branches spread. This is important now, but you won't see extra budding this year. Make sure to fertilize in the late summer, early fall before the leaves drop; and again a month or so before you would normally expect blossoms.
For 3) Wait.
Sorry I'm not more help on this one.
