QuestionMy husband has a small house in southeastern Ohio.
The house sits in the center of a double lot and has no fence. We would like to plant an informal hedge along his property line for some privacy. I have two questions:
1. How close to our property line can we plant?
2. It looks like that part of Ohio is in Zone 5 or 6 so what about Forsythia? I like the "flowering fountain look", but I am from Tampa so I am trying to research on the Internet.
If you know of any good websites or books for that area, God knows that I need the help!
Thank you so much. Hopefully, I haven't ask too many questions.

AnswerEsther,
As far planting on the property line there are a couple of things to consider.
First, as plants grow they get bigger in diameter, so you would not want to plant a shrub that has a mature diameter of 10', a radius of 5', 3' from the line. I always recommend planting 1.5 times the radius from the property line. So the plant with a 5' radius would be planted 7.5' from the property line. Also check with any zoning and easement regulations exist in your area.
Second, search away. Forsythia is great in the spring, but it deciduous and loses its leaves in the winter. Go to your local garden center and speak with their experts for help in selecting plant material.
Good luck
