QuestionI am starting to design a new planting area in front of my home. My front yard is 250' wide x 150' (depth) from the road to my house. I am building an Allan block retaining wall along the road, which will be about 3' high. Dirt will be back filled and a serpentine rear (toward the house) will be cut into my Bermuda Sod. The depth of the planting bed, at the large part of the serpentine, will be about 15', the narrowest part will be about 10'. The 250' front will be divided into two areas, by the driveway. The first area will be approximately 185', then a 10' driveway, then the remaining ~ 50' for the second area. I live the North West Georgia. We're very hot, dry and humid this time of year and our cold days will reach as low as the lower teens in the winter. I am looking for low growth, low maintence perrenials to fill this bed. Your suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Hal Maulden
AnswerThere are a lot of other factors to consider besides humidity/cold. Also consider the orientation - is it facing hot south, or cool north? Is the soil poor in nutrients? Do you want deciduous or evergreen foliage?
The University of Georgia has a list, by size and type, of plants that do well where you live:

Print this list out and take it to your local nursery. They can help you pick the right plant for your yard. Hpope that helps.
