QuestionHello,
I live in Kentucky and I would like to know when is the best time of year to prune a dogwood tree.
And how far to prune it back.
The tree is about 15 years old.
Thank you,
Keith.
AnswerDOGWOOD (Cornus)
Prune during the dormant season.(now) Avoid cutting dogwoods during summer months when the Dogwood Borer is active; if unavoidable, spray cuts with Lindane.
Prune as little as possible, clean out of dead or broken limbs, thin out some branches to permit light penetration and air circulation to center, If necessary. Leave lower branches on the tree to help shade the shallow root system, Do not allow any branches to touch the ground. let the tree assume its natural tree shape.
