use of gravel ...

Question
Dear Mark,

There is basically bare soil by our back door, upon which I have laid out 2 large stones that gets us from the driveway to the entrance.

The problem is there is a bit of dried dirt on the siding of the house (in that back door area) from the ground to about 12 inches up. I think when it rains, the drops "kick up the dirt," (but then again, the stepping stones seem pretty clear ... anyway)--Do you think laying down some gravel will help this situation? If so, what is the most economical to purchase?

Thank you in advance for considering my question (I definitely didn't want to buy a bunch if it wasn't going to make a difference).

Tom

Answer
Hello:

For a walking surface use pea gravel. The size is basically small and large. Small makes the best walking surface because it compacts better.

It can be purchased in 50 pound bags. Lay it 4 inches deep in the ground or retained by an edging.
