QuestionWe live in Northwest Ohio and we have two nice saga palm plants in pots on our patio in direct sunlight. During the winter months, our landscaper moves these two sagas to their greenhouse and returns them in the late Spring. This summer, one of the plants has grown a large cylindrical formation on top of the center of the plant where the new fronds usually grow. We are wondering what this formation is and if it is a seed pod or what?
Also, if this is a seed pod, can we start new plants? How and when?
AnswerHi, Jim - Congratulations. It is a most likely a seed pod for a Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta), IF you have a female palm, and it has been pollinated (How many other Sagos are there in Ohio?), you should get some seeds. -- Here is a link that will help you identify the sex, and how to propagate from seed, if you do in fact have a female producing a seed pod:

If you are adventuresome enough to try and grow a crop of Sagos, I've seen other people's "how to" suggestions on Youtube.com. Give it a search.
Thanks for your patience, as I return from vacation....Good luck! Marc
