QuestionI am planning the installation of a stone pathway to connect my driveway to the rear corner of my lot. The yard is genly sloped laterally in the direction of the pathway and to the rear of the lot. I'm worried that any pathway I install will create a reservoir effect. Will a french drain installed along the yard side of the pathway be sufficient? I'm at the early planning stage so any related advice is welcome. Thanks.
AnswerThanks for the question Mike. When dealing with drainage, it is sometimes difficult to picture how to deal with this without being there. ( I need to walk the yard with clients and take all this into consideration before I ever give any quotes or suggestions usually ) What sort of climate do you live in? Do you have harsh winters? Do you have a picture?
I don't know exactly how much of a slope you are dealing with, and how much of an area that will need to drain.
I can make a suggestion or 2 for you that you can put some thought too.
When dealing with water, it is always best to surface drain water when you can. I have replaced many french drains that were not installed properly, or were not needed in the first place.
If the area in question in rather large, I would consider a dry river bed through the pathway with stepping stones placed in the bed or even a small bridge over a swale. (These are easy to install and affordable as well.)
Pick the spot where most of the water will cross, or do so minor grade changing to direct it to a spot of your choice. you could also have a small swale alongside the pathway ( a couple of feet away) directing it to the back.
If none of this is an option for you, then the french drain should work as well. You asked if it will be sufficient? Does that mean it can be a lot of water in your yard?
If you could get back to me with a little more info, that would be great. Thanks so much. Kevin
