QuestionI just had a culvert placed across my long drive for water drainage. Rain runoff crosses our drive, coming from our neighbors and surrounding fields. I need to stabilize the soil at each end of this culvert. I would love some suggestions of materials and correct process for erosion control. Thanks
AnswerYou have options here Becky. It depends on your budget and what you like. When dealing with erosion, I would love to have a picture if possible. If a client called me with this question, I would want to visit the yard on a rainy day. My main concern with erosion control is NOT to protect from it, but to CONTROL the flow of water whenever possible.
Are doing it yourself? Do you want something with low maintenance? Do you prefer Rocks, mulch, boulders?
Without looking at this, ( from the picture I have in my head which could be TOTALLY different) I would look at building a nice rock bed with a dry-river bed through it. Underneath the rock beds, I would use a heavy woven landscape fabric. ( not cloth )
A small amount of regrading would have to be done( a swale/depression through the bed ) to channel the runoff water from the top of drive and re-direct it to the ditch through your rock bed so you have more control over the water.
This would keep the water away from the culvert and edge of your drive.
in the lowest part of the swale would be the dry creek bed with the rock of your choice. on the banks of the swale you could plant some shrubs.
Again, this is just an option and I haven't seen it.
This is an easy and relatively cheap way to deal with this issue. Also. It can be modified or improved on very easily.
You could also build a small wall to stabilize the culvert and driveway edge. This does not help you control the water though. Possibly a combination of the two might look good?
Do you have any pictures of this area? That would help me a lot.
Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thanks for the question. Kevin
