QuestionI live in the Houston, TX area. What shrubs/plants would be good for an east facing house? I like color and it would be nice to have perennials, but I also need things that can withstand the high heat/humidity in the Houston climate. It would be nice, too, to have suggestions for plants that don't need alot of water, but I do have a sprinkler system in my garden. Also, it would be nice to have things that bloom/have color through out the 4 seasons, if possible. Thanks.
AnswerGreetings!
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, however my family has been dealing with some illness and accidents for the past several months.
I am located in Florida, however many of our plants are used in your area. Check with the Enchanted Forest Garden Center and Nursery in your area for additional information and advice.
Consider using Loropetalum Ruby or Burgundy, which have reddish leaves and a pink bloom and will tolerate heat and humidity. Also, consider using Raphiolepis indica alba (Indian Hawthorn) which has a white bloom, grows slowly and is drought tolerant. Tulbaghia violacea (Society Garlic) which has a purple bloom, is very drought tolerant, however consider planting this out near the road unless you are a garlic lover. If you are looking for climbers for trellis or arbor, please consider the Bougainvillea in any color of your choice, however they do have very sharp thorns and are not a friendly plant. Any species of the Bulbine species are very drought tolerant and have been seen planted along highways. They do bloom yellow and seem to bloom all through the hot months. So there area few suggestions for you and your yard. Again check out the Enchanted Forest Garden Center and Nursery. They really have great information and are willing to share their knowledge
